Baby Einstein Refund: Kids Too Much Like Real Baby Einstein
Disney's recently announced decision to offer a refund to parents who purchased its popular “Baby Einstein” videos vindicates researchers who had been attacked by the company. Their study, published in the prestigious journal Pediatrics, showed that each daily hour of viewing of these kinds of “educational” videos by children aged 8-16 months was associated with a decrease in vocabulary of about 6-8 words.
When the study was published, Disney's CEO Robert Iger demanded that the researchers retract the press release that accompanied it. They refused. Now, Disney is offering refunds. The videos seem to make children more similar to the real baby Einstein than to the adult genius they were trying to replicate: Einstein himself developed language late and did not speak until he was four. So parents, what can we do now to healthily distract the littlest ones? There's gotta be something...

I remember reading this story...there is more to it, I want to see what the "test" was --I think they knew fewer easy/common words, but they probably know bigger words--like "symphony" ... I say re-test those kids

Or, it could be somehow related to the fact that you would expect kids to have smaller vocabularies if they're watching videos as lame and non-educational as the Einstein videos.
I got the first three for my son when he was a few months old and we were both yawning while those retarded hand puppets sat there and made stupid little noises, then a toy commercial would go past. I can't believe anybody would show their children that tripe.
I canned those stupid things and went for Brainy Baby, and the difference was immediate. My son starting paying attention to the videos. They actually focus on education by just jumping straight into the alphabet, numbers, colors, and shapes; you know by actually talking. I mean these guys really wipe the floor with Einstein's face. I don't see how a parent could do a comparison, or would neglect to do a comparison, and choose Einstein over anything, especially Brainy Baby.
For the record, that lame excuse about watching videos on TV and not learning words is bogus. My son's vocabulary has definitely increases respectably. Just turn the Einstein off. Disney is just trying to sell the next video. They don't give a flip about your kid. It's obvious.

While demonizing Baby Einstein does create headlines, it also obscures the important fact that the research on "baby TV" is not so black and white. The research now shows what parents have known for a long time...the CONTENT MATTERS. The research also indicates that actively watching along with your baby, commenting, narrating and engaging your child can also have a positive effect.
As the creators of eebee's adventures, an award-winning line of developmental toys, books, and yes, TV and DVDs that have been dubbed the "un-Baby Einstein" by the press, we are eager to learn more about what makes sense for parents and babies in the screen-centric world in which we live. We know that babies are playing along with each "adventure" and that parents and siblings are engaging babies with eebee songs and activities when the TV is off. Assuming moderation in tv-viewing, we think these are good things--actively engaged babies and caregivers.
We also think that while it's essential that we are all critical consumers, especially when it comes to our kids, that--dare we say it--we don't throw the baby out with the bath water. http://www.eebee.com/blog
